Today was my first day of Summer break. For the last 5 months I have been taking my little art cart from class to class teaching art lessons to 4th, 5th and 6th graders. It has been challenging at times but overall it was a great experience. Yesterday I was able to go to the district office and sign a new contract, so I know I will have a job next year.
I am very fortunate that I went back to school for my credential during the time period I did. When I first went back to school teachers were being laid off left and right. I kept hearing "things will get better in the future" and I took a leap of faith. When I officially received my credential the job outlook had gotten better and I could actually find job listings. Luckily I found my current teaching job because of networking and being in the right place at the right time. I have great fellow art teachers as mentors and I see how teaching art has inspired and expanded my own creativity. I look forward to the next year of classes but for now I am enjoying my time off.
